Mounting a Gas Cooktop Over a Gas Oven

A gas cooktop is one of the most popular types of cooking appliance in private kitchens. Cooktops aren't cheap, and paying a professional to fit one of these will be very expensive. Learning how to mount the gas cooktop yourself will save lots of money. It's not even that difficult as long as you have the right tools and materials available.

Tools and Materials

  • Brackets
  • Saw
  • Drill
  • Screwdrivers
  • Gas Cooktop

Step 1 - Choose a Location

It's important to choose a location that has a gas and electricity supply. Avoid areas which have any obstructions or anything else which could make it difficult to use your cooktop.

Measure the space to make sure that there is enough room to install the cooktop. Ideally, it needs to be at least 2  inches away from the front of the counter to be safe. It also needs to be positioned around ½-inch away from all walls.

Step 2 - Marking the Counter

Once you've chosen the location for your gas cooktop, mark and cut the counter so that it fits in properly. Place the cooktop on the counter and draw around it with a pencil. If you are fitting the cooker in a pre-existing hole, make sure it is either the same size or big enough to fit the newappliance.

Once the area has been marked, you can then cut it out. Again, if this is a new counter, you will need to use a drill to start the hole before you cut with the saw. Make sure that the cooktop can fit properly inside the counter without many gaps around the outside.

Step 3 - Connecting Gas

The gas line needs to be connected to your new cooker. You will then need to locate the valve and open it to allow the gas to flow through.

Step 4 - Fixing the Cooktop

The cooktop will be fixed to the counter using a number of brackets and screws. It's important that you don't over-tighten these screws because it can make taking the counter top off very difficult in the future. You should also avoid using caulking where possible because this can also make removing the cooktop difficult.

Step 5 - Testing

All that's left to do is test your cooktop. Turn on one of the gas burners and press the ignition button. You should hear the gas cooktop spark and the gas should light. If there are any problems,  you will need to do some troubleshooting to find out what the problem is.

Fitting your very own gas cooktop isn't actually as difficult as most people imagine. All you need are a few tools and enough spare time to do a good job. If of course you're not confident working with gas then you should hire a professional.
