Multiple Uses of Portable Solar Power

Not limited to hardwired, permanently-fixed modules, portable solar power options are available, enabling you to go where you will and still be able to tap into the sun's free energy. In addition to portable solar power generators, solar-powered chargers for phones, laptops and other electronic devices are becoming more and more common. These often are built into briefcases, backpacks and other carrying objects. For camping or backpacking, solar lights, shower packs and other items are useful and lightweight. There are multiple uses for portable solar power, both with hand-carried and larger items.

Generators

Portable solar-powered generators are useful for a wide variety of applications, from recreational vehicles to an emergency power supply. Consisting of a single photovoltaic panel connected to a unit containing the inverter and battery, portable solar generators produce a variable output wattage and typically provide 120-volt power. Equipped with several standard outlets, plug just about anything into the generator for use virtually anywhere.

Chargers

Another way to harness the power of the sun while on the go is with a portable solar power charger. Usually part of a carrying case of some kind, solar chargers feature a flexible solar panel stitched or built right into the side of the bag, backpack or briefcase. As you are out and about, plug a phone, digital camera, iPod or even a laptop into the port provided with the charger. With the panel absorbing solar energy, the electronic device will achieve a full charge in a relatively short amount of time.

Lights

While solar lights are commonly found lining walkways, patios or landscaped yards of homes, portable solar lights are useful when camping. Set them out during the day in the full sun. The built-in panel will charge the internal battery of the light, automatically turning it on as soon as the photosensor fails to detect the sun's light. Solar lights make a good alternative to propane or battery-powered lanterns frequently used on camping trips.

Showers

Solar-powered showers, too, make a great camping or backpacking accessory. Lightweight and easy to carry, solar showers consist of a fillable water storage bag. Like other portable solar devices, solar showers feature a built-in panel. In the morning, fill up the bag with cold water. Hang the bag directly in the sun. In the evening, after the bag has had time to fully absorb the sun's rays, warming the water to a more comfortable temperature, enjoy a shower. Portable shower heads can be connected to the solar shower.

Solar Ovens

Whether you use one for camping or in a recreational vehicle, a portable solar oven is a fast, convenient way to prepare food without having to resort to propane. Solar ovens are made from durable, thermal materials that trap the sun's energy, transferring it to whatever is contained within. Some ovens can reach temperatures of up to 400 degrees F, making them capable of cooking almost anything.

Solar power is not limited to fixed systems. Portable solar power systems are affordable, convenient and environmentally friendly, not to mention cost effective. Reduce the amount of propane, non-rechargeable battery power and/or gas- or coal-generated electricity you use. With one of the many portable solar power systems, you always have access to free solar energy no matter where you are.
