A nonbearing wall is a wall construction that only has the purpose of supporting the weight of itself. Typically, a nonbearing wall would be a wall that is an interior wall that is constructed for the reason of separation of area.

What Is the Difference Between a Nonbearing and a Bearing Wall?

The main difference is that a bearing wall will have a difference purpose that relates to the structure of the building. For example, a bearing wall could be put in place to help uphold the ceiling. A nonbearing wall is interior and supports nothing to do with the structure. It simply divides an area.

Is a Nonbearing Wall Easy to Build?

A nonbearing wall is actually relatively easy to build. All that is required is a simple on-center frame structure and some drywall. This can typically be done by a do-it-yourself person in less than a day. The materials used are minimal and typically ones you might have lying around the house if you are an avid do-it-yourselfer.
