Off grid solar power may seem, at first glance, like a goal that is limited to ultra-green homes owned by people who are ultra-concerned about the environment. However, off grid power is a cost efficient and low maintenance goal that can be achieved by many homeowners.
Step 1 - Purchase and Install a Solar Panel
Purchasing solar panels and going off the grid may seem overly expensive. However, you can begin by purchasing only one or two panels.
Step 2 - Save Money on Your Power Bills and Taxes
Even with only one or two panels, your power bills will decrease. You can take up to 30% of the cost of the solar panels off on your federal taxes. Some states offer additional incentives, so be sure to research the laws surrounding off grid solar panels in your state.
Step 3 - Purchase and Install Additional Solar Panels
Use the money you save on your power bills and your taxes to purchase and install additional solar panels. As you install more panels, you will save more money; as you save more money, you can install more panels.
Step 4 - Go off the grid!
Eventually, you will have enough solar panels to become completely independent from the power grid. You may even be able to feed off grid solar power back into the grid and get paid for your solar panels!
