Organic Dry Food: Sun Drying

by DoItYourself Staff

Organic dry food can be sun dried using the power of the sun following a few simple steps. You will need to ensure that the outside temperature will be at least 100 degrees Fahrenheit for a few days, and the humidity must be low.

Follow these steps to start sun-drying your food:

  1. Go to the hardware store to purchase window screens. You will use these as drying trays;
  2. Wash the trays thoroughly and then line the trays with cheesecloth;
  3. Wash the fruits, vegetables, or herbs you want to make organic dry food with;
  4. Place the food you are going to dry on the lined trays – leave room around each piece for air flow;
  5. Place a layer of cheesecloth on the food. This will deter pests;
  6. Fasten the cheesecloth to the tray using clothespins;
  7. Set the trays on a table outside. Use blocks of wood to allow for airflow underneath;
  8. If the temperature is going to drop at night make sure you bring the trays in;

Once completely dried your organic dry food can be stored in freezer bags or tightly sealing plastic containers, in a dark area.
