Organizing Your Cabinets And Cupboards

by DoItYourself Staff

When you first move into a new place, it can be difficult to determine which cabinets and cupboards should be used for your kitchen appliances and dishes. Here are some helpful tips to organize your kitchen and use your storage space wisely.

Empty Your Cabinets, Cupboards and Drawers

The first step is to empty out your kitchen cabinets, cupboards and drawers. It is much simpler to remove the items all at the same time then choose new locations for your dishes, tools and food items.

With your cabinets and cupboards empty, take the opportunity to wipe down the inside of the cabinets to prepare them for the new arrangement.

Plan a New Arrangement

Once you have all of the items out of the cabinets, take the time to plan out where you will put your items. If there is a cabinet over your stove, for instance, this is a great place to put your spices and food items so they are in easy reach while cooking.

Install any organization tools at this time as well. Hooks are a simple and effective tool to add to your kitchen cabinets and can be used to hold coffee cups instead of filling up the cabinets. Drawer organizers can be put in place to keep your silverware in order instead of jumbled together.

On the top of the counters, include holders to store some of your commonly used tools such as big spoons and spatulas. You can choose a lovely container of any kind to put on the counter instead of filling up the drawers with your kitchen tools. They will be out of the drawer and in easy reach when you are cooking.

Glasses and dishes should be within easy reach and not tucked away in an awkward location. Take the time to think about the rest of the members of the family so that you can find the best place to put your dishes and glasses.

Limited Space

If you don’t really have enough cabinets, cupboards and drawers in your kitchen to accommodate all of your items, install some extra shelving in the room.  Free standing cabinets can be installed in the kitchen to give you more room.  Microwave carts are a good choice for the extra storage space underneath as well as getting your microwave off of the counters. Space saver appliances that install under the cabinets are another way to gain some counter space in your kitchen.
