Outfitting the Patio or Deck
By J. A. Young
Once you have installed and finished your patio, deck or platforms the real fun can begin. Choosing furniture, special features and props is a labor of love. Patio furniture comes in wide array of materials and designs that run the gamut in expense and durability. The subsequent article discusses various types of patio furniture with some reference to special features and likely props.

Patio furniture ranges from the purely functional to elaborate pieces that transform the space into an outdoor room. Plastic is probably at the bottom of the furniture scale; it will do the trick, but lacks permanence and visual appeal. A good step up from plastic is marine-grade resin. Resin furniture comes in many styles and colors while remaining reasonably durable and inexpensive. Marine-grade resin table and chair sets are popular choices for many decks and patios. With both plastic and resin furniture you will need to place them in a shady spot or store them out of the sun until needed; the sun will cause the color to fade otherwise.

Furniture made from aluminum is rustproof and durable enough to withstand the elements. Many designs have enhanced comfort with better frames and vinyl strap seating. The better quality aluminum pieces will have a powder finish as opposed to anodized or paint finishes. Aluminum is a good choice with a great look for a relatively moderate cost. You may also dress your furniture set up with some formal planters and elegant lighting fixtures.

Wrought iron furniture paired with cushions or left with its decorative framework exposed is an elegant choice reminiscent of the Victorian era which favored wrought iron for many garden accoutrements. Be on guard against chipped paint; touch up with paint to prevent rust every couple of years. Apart from that simple maintenance, wrought iron furniture is made to last. It is also extremely versatile looking perfectly natural in a southwestern garden or an English cottage garden. If you add cushions to any pieces, be sure to employ weather resistant types.

Wood furniture, especially rot resistant teak or oak pieces, is also a good choice for patio furniture. It should be stored in winter and refinished annually, but it makes for solid furniture that is both comfortable and beautiful. Paired with foam-filled cushions made to withstand Mother Nature, you will have the makings of luxurious comfort. Wood comes in a wide variety of designs from chases to sofas to chairs. Wicker and rattan may also be considered, but pieces generally don't last long, and inexpensive wicker pieces are prone to rot. Of course if you have a screened porch, rattan and wicker will suit fine and comes in a wide array of styles.

Stone benches and tables may also be installed. There's no harm in mixing pieces up and even weatherproofing or revamping some indoor pieces. Tables may be as rustic as picnic models or as formal as glass-topped designs. Accompany your set with an outdoor bakers rack for contained plants, a plant stand, planters and special containers. Set are also available in children's sizes that are perfect for family get togethers. Umbrellas are almost a must for sunny locations.

Grills and outdoor cooking devices may need to occupy an area of your patio. Mats and side tables are suitable for this area. Also, consider installing an outdoor bar if you do much entertaining. Some benches actually double as storage spaces for items like grilling utensils, ice buckets, candle holders, etc.

Apart from furniture, the patio or deck should be reasonably well-lit for evening entertainment. Lanterns may be strung across the expanse, but sconces and torches may be installed as well. Whatever your garden style, there is a light fixture to match the décor. Other items you may consider are wall fountains, tabletop fountains, sundials, mosaic tiles, statuary, etc. Naturally, enthusiastic gardeners will want to add to the décor with special plants for added appeal.
