How To Select Paving Stones

Paving stones are used in the creation of patios, walkways and driveways. These special stones are generally inset into the ground and are held together using materials such as grout, mortar or even earth. Selecting the right paving stones can have a big impact on the outcome of a do-it-yourself project. Planning should involve a multistep process.

Step 1 – Examine the Space for Paving Stones

Before making a selection of paving stones, understand the space they will be placed into. Take measurements of the desired walkway, drive or patio. This can help make the final determination easier. A particularly large area, for example, can be tedious to pave with bricks.

Step 2 – Consider The Desired Look

Certain paving stones lend themselves better to some design ideas than others. Consider whether the final look should be:

  • Uniform;
  • Outdoorsy;
  • Upscale.

Step 3 – Review Paving Stone Options

Paving stones come in a variety of sizes, shapes and colors. Some of the options include:

  • Bricks, which are known for uniformity;
  • Flagstone, which is a beautiful slate gray in color, but is not perfectly uniform;
  • Cobblestone, which, as the name suggests, is not uniform, but it can have a timeless appearance;
  • Limestone, which has a light color and can be cut uniform or delivered in multiple sizes.
