Pellet Stove Parts Explained
When working together, pellet stove parts transform sawdust and other wood waste into fuel for heat in an efficient and eco-friendly way. Pellet stoves are cleaner and healthier than old fashioned woodburning stoves because they create no creosote and expel minimal pollution.
Freestanding Pellet Stoves
The shell of this type of stove is usually well-insulated with a special heat-resistant shield—called a fireback—that prevents the outer surface of the stove from becoming too hot. Inside the stove, a hopper holds the pellets until an auger distributes them evenly and continuously into the burn pan where they are consumed. The auger can be fed from the bottom, where the pellets are fed horizontally and the ash is moved into an ash pan, or it can be a top-feed model that drops the pellets from the top, allowing ash to accumulate. An igniter lights the fire and is activated by the control panel, located on the outside of the stove, which powers the components and regulates heat. Glass doors prevent harmful sparks from landing outside the stove, and special gaskets made to withstand high temperatures seal the whole unit safely. Some pellet stoves are equipped to connect directly to your home's existing vent system, while others have a blower fan to disperse heat into the air. These need to be vented separately using a vent kit and stove pipe. Freestanding stoves should be cleaned every week.
Pellet Stove Inserts
The main difference between freestanding stoves and inserts is the ventilation method. Pellet stove inserts can be installed into your existing wood stove and use the chimney for venting. Similar in construction and operating on the same principles as a freestanding stove, the insert should be cleaned and the chimney swept once a year.
Accessories
Many pellet stove accessories are available to provide added appeal and a custom look to your stove.
Log sets, available for placement inside the stove, provide the beauty and charm of a realistic fire. Door handles and leg styles can be changed, while etched glass can replace original doors and stove screens add a rustic touch. Add trim and alter finishes to match personal preferences.
