If you have an outdoor pet, a pet storm door may be part of your remodeling plans. Here are some steps for building a pet storm door.
Step One – Choose the Storm Door
Choose a storm door that fits the needs of your family. Many people want a storm door to enjoy the cool evening or morning breezes without allowing bugs into the home. Others want a glass door to allow the sunlight in during the winter months. Although you can install a pet door on a solid glass door, it is easier if it has a metal or fiberglass base.
Step Two – Choose the Pet Door
There are a variety of different pet doors available from many manufacturers. Choose the side and style that is best for your pet. You might decide on a smaller door that has a positive sliding lock so that you can prevent the pet from going in or out at certain times, or you may choose a simple rubber flap that cannot be locked for maximum pet freedom.
Step Three – Install the Pet Door
Follow the instructions on the pet door to measure and cut the opening in the storm door. Install the outer frame and then put the pet door flap into the door. Complete installation by installing the storm door onto the door frame.
