Plant Photography Made Easy

by DoItYourself Staff

Trying out plant photography is an interesting task especially if you love plants, gardening and landscapes. You do not need to be an expert photographer to take beautiful pictures because plants are wonderful in their simplicity and natural settings. Here we shall be discussing some basic tips and techniques to keep in mind when you embark on this photographic project.

When to Best Take the Shots

Choosing the most suitable time is important both in terms of the season, time of day and the growing progress of the plant. Try to establish the most fertile time of year where the plant is at its best stage of blossoming or flowering. Another important aspect is to choose a time of day when the setting is at its best. For example, if you want a dark setting, choose to shoot the photo at sunset. If, on the other hand, you prefer the photo to be bright, then choose a setting which is not shady and opt for a morning or afternoon time. Always bear in mind that timing is a fundamental aspect in photography, and even more in the case of plant photography.

The Main Feature

Any photo features a main angle, item or aspect. In the case of plant photography, it could be a particular petal or leaf, or maybe a bee settling on the flower. Natural settings are enticing in their simplicity. Make sure that prior to starting shooting photos at random, you take some time to look around, examine well, and then decide on the most enticing scenes or elements. It is better to focus on a selected few rather than on several ones so as to make sure to shoot higher quality pictures. Plant photography is a good start for any photographer, as there is not much movement involved. You will have the advantage to capture a breathtaking view without the problem of it moving, so do make sure you make your homework well in advance.

The Camera

You do not have to have a high quality camera to shoot beautiful pictures. Nowadays, most cameras are relatively cheap but still feature good settings and can produce sharp photos. The trick is to have enough light and an appealing view or subject. You may find it easier to have a tripod handy if you wish to shoot photos of a whole landscape though.

Some Basic Yet Effective Tips

There are some simple tips and ways which can make a photo look more original. For instance, it is a good idea to try to capture a bird or a bee in the vicinity of the plant to add a lively subject. Another cute method is to drop a few drops of water on a flower’s leaves or petals as they make a beautiful effect. Try retouching the same photo in different ways. Sepia and black and white effects are nice touches, but in the case of plant photography, it is a good idea to emphasize on colors, so a good idea is to bring out the petals’ colors more effectively by letting them be the only colorful part of the picture.
