Plastic Melted on Surfaces FAQ

Thermoplastic or heat-softened plastics can be melted and fused to surfaces, as when a plastic dish or film is put on heated cooking surface by mistake. If the plastic can be softened by heating to a low temperature, you may be able to scrape it off with a smooth flat piece of wood, or anything that will not itself melt when hot and will not damage the surface. If irritating fumes are produced as the plastic is heated, do not breathe them. If opening windows and doors for ventilation does not remove the fumes, it would be better to throw away the damaged pan or oven rack than to injure your health by breathing the fumes.

Sometimes you may be able to grind off the hardened plastic residue with a power sander. Or take it to an appliance or auto repair shop and see what they would charge to do this.
