Pond Filter Cleaning and Maintenance

The pond filter is an important part of maintaining a crystal clear pond. This article will go over a few things to keep in mind when it comes to the maintenance and cleaning of your filtration system.

Preventative Maintenance

The reason you have a pond filter is to lower the maintenance required to keep a clean and sparkling pond. Having a pond filter does require regular maintenance of the mechanics of the filter. Occasionally, you will want to check to ensure the filter is working properly. If your filter is not installed properly, or is not working, you will have to deal with algae build-up. So, it’s best to make sure it’s working before there is a problem.

Spring Cleaning

It’s a good idea to clean the filter every spring. Any biological growth or clogs can simply be rinsed off the filter. This is also a good time to replace any filter pads. Keeping the filter pads clean is important, so you don’t want to skip this step. Additionally, check the other mechanical part of the filter and make repairs or replace as necessary.

Replace Tubing

The tubing within your pond does not have to be replaced each year, however you still need to check it every once and awhile to ensure that no material build-up, cracks, or kinks are present. If you have an external filter, you may need to replace its tubing every now and again. Be sure to inspect the tubing while you change the filters.

Test the Water

Testing the water for toxins and pH balance can help you determine how well the filter is working. If the water contains high levels of toxins, has a pH balance that is too acidic or not enough, then you may want to consider a new filter. It may not completely solve the problem, but it will help to bring balance back to your pond.

Algae Control

If you look into your pond and a good amount of growth in your pond, then there is most likely a problem with your filter. Take a look at your filter and repair or replace components as necessary. Also,  be sure to clean the algae off the surfaces of your pond to prevent more growth. Make sure to complete this task as soon as you can as algae can bloom very quickly.
