Popcorn Ceiling General Repair

by DoItYourself Staff

If a popcorn ceiling has cracks, or the popcorn has come off in pieces and looks dirty, there are ways to fix it. First, make sure it isn't one of the older ceilings with asbestos because it must be removed by a licensed asbestos abatement contractor.

To clean a popcorn ceiling, vacuum it or use a feather duster. You don't want to press it too hard, or pieces may fall down.  To fill holes or cracks, scrape with a putty knife and make sure none of the textured material is sticking to the area. Sand and prime any area where you are going to apply new texture. Then you have a choice of using one of the aerosol spray products or getting more involved with mixing paint and new textured pieces that come in different grades.

Mask off anything that you don't want to get the new material on, and spray or use a roller, depending on which type of you chose. You can test it on a board or piece of drywall to see how it will look. Let it dry and apply a second coat if needed. If you are careful your ceiling should look as good as new.
