Popcorn Ceiling Maintenance

by DoItYourself Staff

If you have a popcorn ceiling that needs to be cleaned or repaired, you need to be careful. First, older popcorn ceiling material may contain asbestos. It should be tested and dealt with by a certified asbestos abatement contractor. Second, the material comes off easily. Pressing too hard while cleaning it may cause pieces of the material to fall.

How to Clean a Popcorn Ceiling

If the ceiling is dusty or has cobwebs, use a vacuum with a soft brush, or a feather duster. Brush the ceiling lightly. This will probably require use of a step ladder to reach the ceiling. If there are stains, a sponge dipped in vinegar and water can be used. Any contact with the ceiling may knock parts of the popcorn texture off.

How to Repair a Popcorn Ceiling

Remove the textured material around any hole or crack. Make sure to sand the drywall smooth. Prime the area, then fill in the space with new material. If water caused the problem, the leak has to be repaired or the problem will come back. Small holes can be filled with spackle, then textured with a putty knife. Matching the repair to the old look can be difficult. Touching up the ceiling with paint can help.
