Portable BBQ Safety Measures

by DoItYourself Staff

A portable bbq offers flexibility, ease, and the opportunity to choose different locations for a barbecue party. These appliances must also be used with extreme caution, to prevent dangerous accidents.

Before Use

Most portable bbqs are used after being stored over the winter. It is important to check your barbecue properly before using it, and to do regular maintenance on it. Inspect the barbecue properly and ensure that there are no cracks or breaks on the grill or tubes. Clean the tubes and burners thoroughly, using a small brush.

If you have a gas barbecue, make sure the cylinder is securely attached and shut tight. Check for any gas leaks before using the barbecue by applying a soap solution to the tubes, gas valves, and the mouth of the propane cylinder. The presence of bubbles indicates a gas leak. In this case, or if you smell gas, turn off the barbecue.

Placement

One of the most important safety considerations is the placement and levelness of a portable bbq. Only use barbecues in open, level spaces, and maintain a safe distance from your home and other buildings or sheds. Make sure there are no overhanging structures that could catch fire, and also avoid placing the barbecue under electric lines. Place the barbecue on a firm, solid, level non-combustible surface. Make sure the barbecue is set firmly in place.

Starting the Barbecue

Never leave the barbecue closed when you light it. This increases the danger of gas buildup. Only light gas barbecues with a gas lighter. Never use matchsticks or cigarettes. Never move a barbecue when it is in use, no matter how light it is. Avoid adjusting the cylinder when the grill is in use. Never use combustible materials to start a fire, and never add fuel to a fire that is already burning.

Using the Barbecue

Once the barbecue is ready to use, maintain the optimum temperature while cooking. Never leave a barbecue unattended. Make sure that children are playing a safe distance away from the barbecue. Avoid drinking alcohol if you are barbecuing, and make sure alcoholic drinks do not get too close to the barbecue. Do not wear long, loose clothing, and protect yourself with heat resistant mittens. Use tongs for cooking, and make sure you have enough water or an approved fire extinguisher handy in case of emergencies.

Shutting Off the Barbecue

If you are using a gas barbecue, it is a good practice to turn off the burners after you shut the gas supply first. This way, the remnants of gas will be burnt without being spread into the air. If you use a charcoal barbecue, wait until the ashes are cold, and then dispose of them. Remove all grease and food particles from the barbecue, and store the lighter, charcoal, and fuels safely. Never store propane cylinders in your home. Be very careful when transporting portable bbqs, and keep them in a secure location where they will not roll around in transit. Before transporting a portable bbq, make sure the cylinder is tightly shut, and that the barbecue has completely cooled down.
