Practicing Yoga at Home

by DoItYourself Staff

what you'll need

  • Yoga mat
  • Yoga block (optional)
  • Yoga belt (optional)
  • Loose fitting clothing
  • Adequate space

Learning to practice yoga at home might be just the thing you need to feel comfortable with this form of exercise. If you have done yoga before or have an interest in learning a routine, consider practicing at home. You will need a few things, but if you can discipline yourself to do it regularly, you will feel the benefits.

Step 1: Prepare a Space and Time

Yoga requires a particular mindset where you let everything else go. No outside worries or distractions should come into your mind. Find a time of the day where you can be alone and a space in your home free of obstacles. Set aside at least one hour for your routine.

Step 2: Prepare Yourself

Change into your loose fitting clothing. Sweatpants, loose shorts or other workout clothes will do just fine. Do not have any liquids other than a bottle of water nearby, and do not eat just before you work out.

Step 3: Organize Your Accessories

Put the video or DVD in the player in preparation for your routine. A DVD is much easier to work with, especially one with an easily-accessible menu to quickly change routines. Keep the remote control handy, and put your yoga block and belt within an arm’s reach. Unroll the yoga mat and prepare for the routine.

Step 4: Go through the Routine

As you go through your routine, let the guide on the DVD be your teacher. Keep yourself in the moment, and do not let your thoughts stray from your actions. The most important thing to remember about yoga is to always breathe. Never take a stretch further than is comfortable and go at your own pace. If the instructional DVD you have is too intense, buy or rent one that fits your style. There are many different types of yoga–not all of them are strenuous. Your yoga workout should not be painful in any way. You will feel tired but in a refreshing way. As you practice the routine more, it will become more natural and flowing. You can perform the same routine indefinitely, as you can simply the each stretch deeper, or you can change it up to keep things fresh.

Step 5: Put Everything Away

After you have finished the routine and have sufficiently calmed yourself afterwards, roll up your yoga mat and put it, along with the block, belt and DVD away until your next workout. Hydrate your body with water and maybe make some herbal tea. A quick shower after a yoga workout is always nice too.

For some people, yoga at home is the best way to keep up with the exercise. It lets you work out in a comfortable environment on your own time. With discipline, you can make a home yoga workout a twice or three times-weekly experience that is both enjoyable and invigorating.
