Pros And Cons Of A Portable Electric Fireplace

by DoItYourself Staff

Why would you want a portable electric fireplace? As with any appliance, there are pros and cons to be considered.

The Pros of a Portable Electric Fireplace

Electric fireplaces are easy to use. They are great for places where the homeowner can’t install a chimney or burning laws are strict but the homeowner still wants the ambience of a flaming fire.

With ventless portable models, there’s no need to vent to the outside. Since electric units only simulate flames, they don’t actually burn. As a result, there is no danger of carbon monoxide poisoning.

These units are plug-and-play – a regular electrical socket is all you need. They can move from room to room, and you can store them in the summer if you’d like.

Consider the Cons
There are, however, cons to owning an electrical fireplace. First, electrical fireplaces can simply be glorified space heaters. They add to the electric bill, and really don’t add too much to the warmth of the home – at least compared to a wood stove.

The flames in an electric fireplace do not look realistic, mostly because there isn’t really anything burning. The cracking and snapping of a fire will come from a recording, if you hear it at all.
