Pros and Cons of a Stainless Steel Wine Coolers

by DoItYourself Staff

Stainless steel wine coolers are becoming a fashionable choice for many people due to their modern looks and durable exterior. Wine coolers come in multiple sizes ranging from table top or single coolers to large units housing multiple temperature and humidity compartments. Whatever the size, weighing the pros and cons of stainless steel is necessary to decide if the appliance is a good fit for the household. For some the practicality of rust and corrosion resistance which comes with stainless steel often outweighs the added expense of the modern exterior. However, for others the greater cleaning needs and lack of scratch and scuff resistance aren't worth the extra money.

Pros:

1. Looks Great!

Stainless steel is a modern, visually appealing way to present wines when entertaining. Rather than flat finishes, stainless steel provides high gloss and sleek lines. This added visual interest is of much importance to those who frequently entertain or wish for a cohesive look with their other appliances. Stainless steel works with many different decorative styles so the appliance can adjust as trends shift.

2. Insulating Effects

Stainless steel provides a greater insulating properties than other metals. Due to being an alloy of both steel, nickel and often chromium, the metal only conducts heat 20% as effectively as ordinary steel. This lack of heat transfer adds efficiency to stainless steel refrigerators.

3. Durable Rust and Corrosion Resistance

Because stainless steel is an alloy combining multiple metals with the steel, the surface neither corrodes nor rusts providing an incredible durability to the metal. Often, stainless steel can last decades if properly cared for. The practicality of purchasing such a long lived appliance can be an economic benefit if the kept or sold. The combination of metals, however does yield the stainless steel non-magnetic.

Cons:

1. Scratches

Stainless steel can scratch, scuff, or streak with use. These discolorations and other unsightly marks are often not easy to remove. If the stainless steel wine cooler is being purchased for its aesthetics, this can be a major draw back. With frequent use it is going to also get some abuse, which can occur quite easily. These scratches can be buffed out with quite a bit of elbow grease, but often require rebuffing the entire surface.

2. Keeping Clean

Unlike white or wood paneled wine coolers, stainless steel shows everything. Abrasive pads cannot be used and many household cleaners contain chlorides which will damage the metal. Water marks or standing liquids on the surface often leave splotching and discoloration so keeping the appliance dry is a must. If low maintenance is a factor in purchasing, stainless steel may not be the way to go.

3. Larger Expense

Though not as expensive as many custom finishes, stainless steel is more expensive than many other flat or white finished wine coolers. The added expense could be balanced with the practicality of the longer life-span stainless steel also produces. The cost also increases directly compared to the quality (or thickness) of the stainless, meaning that more durable also equates to more money.
