Pros and Cons of TFT LCD Monitors
TFT LCD monitors or thin film transistor liquid crystal display monitors are light weight cost efficient displays that are gradually replacing the old heavy weight CRT monitors. CRTs were used as the standard display in the early days of TV technology. However, with the improvements in science and technology, TFT LCD monitors, as well as plasma and LEDs, began replacing these standards for a variety of reasons. Here are the pros and cons of TFT LCD monitors.
Pros:
Small Size
When it comes to size, LCD monitors are very advantageous because they require a small space. CRT monitors can eat up a lot of space which can be used for other purposes. Because of the flat, compact size of the LCD monitors, they can be placed with ease at a small desk or any small surface. This advantage brings better space organization to the user.
Light Weight
LCD monitors can be carried easily to other locations because of their light weight design. They do not require a strong guy to carry it around. Even children can easily move the monitor without having a lot of difficulty.
Saves on Energy Costs
As compared to a CRT monitor, the LCD monitor can save about 30% to 50% less energy or even higher. This, in turn, saves a lot of money in the long run because it lessens the monthly electrical bills.
Sharp Display
The monitor displays very sharp images and graphics when configured correctly. The images do not turn out fuzzy or blurry. However, the sharpness of the display may depend on the brand and model. Newer models have better sharpness as compared to old ones.
Cons:
Fixed Native Resolution
This becomes a problem when zooming text, images and graphics. Because the native resolution is fixed, the page lay-out is compromised when the images, text, or graphics are enlarged. This is burdensome to people who cannot easily read small text. When the text is enlarged, the display also becomes low in quality.
Issues with Color Rendition
LCD monitors make it harder for users to achieve accuracy of color even when correctly configured. Levels of black and white are also more difficult to maintain. This becomes an issue during the editing of documents, images, and graphics because the color on the screen may not be accurately reproduced during printing. This also becomes a problem when these edited files are opened in other computers or applications.
Issues in Viewing Angle
In flat screen CRTs, the images displayed on the screen are quite clear even when viewed at different angles. However, the color and contrast becomes distorted in the case of an LCD monitor, especially those of old models.
Nevertheless, newer TFT LCD monitors have better screen resolutions, enhanced viewing options (even at different angles) and better color rendition. The trick is to buy LCD monitors that are up to date and of high quality. Although these models are more expensive than others, they do provide many advantages over CRTs and older LCD monitors.
