Putting Green Construction: How Make the Proper Sized Putting Holes
what you'll need
- Soil Roller
- Turf
- Golf Hole Cutter
- Cup
Putting green construction is a precise science. Golf rules are governed primarily by the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews, Scotland. They produce the official rule book for golf. It is the most famous golf club in the world and is said to be the home of golf. If you are considering creating your own putting green, you will need to first make sure that the ground is prepared correctly.
Step 1 – Soil
The soil must be flattened as much as possible. The idea of a putting green is to have very slight dips and curves rather than bumps and crevices. Use a heavy soil roller to flatten the soil and compact it.
Step 2 – Turf
Slow growing turf is better as a putting green grass. If you have to use ordinary turf, lay it out and then use the roller to compact it slightly. The tighter the turf grain, the faster the putting green will be.
Step 3 – Hole in One
You can buy hole cutters at the standard regulation size (4.25 inches diameter and 4 inches deep). Buying one is a good idea because you can move the hole regularly to maintain a healthy putting green and interchange the movement of the green. Cut the hole with the cutter and place the cup inside. Tap it down gently so that the lip of the cup is just below flush with the top of the hole. Now you can practice putting whenever you feel like it.
