Putting Together an Affordable Carpenter Tool Belt

Materials Needed:

• Belt
• Pockets (or Fabric for Pockets)
• Needle and Thread, or Metal Rivets

Step 1 – Understand your Jobs

A carpenter tool belt is simple. Building your own is a great way to make the tool belt work for your specific jobs. Are you constantly on stairs? Pockets on the sides of the belt could be more useful. Do you bend over a lot? A belt that has strapped pockets may be best for you.

Step 2- Choose a Basic Belt

It is possible to buy a basic, pre-made belt. These belts do not have any pockets, and are simply made to be a template. Choosing a basic belt will give you the template for your final design. If you have a lot of tools, an apron may be the best type of belt. If you have a few tools, a simple fabric or leather belt may suffice.

Step 3 – Understand the Tools

Check out the carpentry tools that you have, especially the ones that you want to put in your tools belt. Check out how heavy they are, and how big they are. Take this into account, and choose the number of tools you want for your belt. The sizes and shapes will affect the sizes of the pockets.

Step 4 – Add the Pockets

Adding the pockets will be the most difficult step you face when creating your own affordable carpenter tool belt. If you have a fabric belt, you can simply sew the pockets out of fabric, and then sew those pockets onto the belt. Be sure to strengthen with double stitching to ensure that the pockets stay put. If you have a leather pocket, you will want to attack the pockets twofold. While you will want to sew the pocket shut, you may want to use the metal rivets to fasten the corners. Metal rivets may be used differently, but are generally installed with a hammer.

Having an affordable carpenter belt is important. While a belt is a good investment, you should be spending your money on tools, and on your job. Taking the time to make the best belt for you may actually be best in the long run. A customized belt will always work best.
