Ragging Paint Technique

Dragging - Marbleizing - Ragging - Sponge Painting

Paint and glaze colors should be selected to compliment each other. The closer the value of the colors, the softer the look. The greater the variation of colors the stronger and more graphic the pattern will appear.

Supplies

• Armaly ProPlus Ragging Roller Cover
• 9 Inch Standard Metal Caged Roller
• Latex Paint
• Latex Glazing Liquid
• Paint Tray (one for each color)
• Armaly ProPlus Fiber Wipes for cleanup
• Armaly ProPlus Fiber Drop Cloths
• Tape for masking

Technique

1. Paint the wall with a latex satin or semi-gloss base coat and allow to dry.
2. Make the glaze.
3. Install Armaly ProPlus Ragging Roller Cover according to the instructions on the package.
4. Negative or "Ragging Off" Method: Because latex glazes dry quickly, ragging off is best done with two people - one to apply the glaze and one to remove the glaze. Using a standard roller cover and paint tray apply the glaze to the wall starting at the ceiling and working your way down. The second person follows behind with the ragging roller cover and removes the glaze in vertical, horizontal and diagonal directions to vary the pattern. Continue until entire wall is finished. It is important to keep leading edge of the paint pattern wet. If you lose the wet edge, dab it with a damp sponge.
• Tip: If too much glaze remains in one area, lightly blot with extra rag. When your Armaly ProPlus Ragging Roller Cover becomes too saturated, simply replace with another Armaly ProPlus Ragging Roller Cover.
5. Positive of "Ragging On" Method: Another way of achieving a rag rolled look is to use the Armaly ProPlus Ragging Roller Cover to apply the glaze to the wall. Instead of removing glaze to achieve texture, in this method the pattern is added to the wall. Pour glaze into a paint tray and saturate the roller cover (do not overload). Roll on the wall starting at ceiling edge and working down in vertical, horizontal, and diagonal directions to vary the pattern. Leave as much base coat showing through as desired, but try to be consistent. It is important to keep the leading edge of the paint pattern wet. If you lose the wet edge, dab it with a damp sponge.
• Tip: Once you start a wall be prepared to finish it! Don't forget your corners. Crumble up a small piece of rag or wrap it around your finger, dab into the corners. If you have too much glaze on the ragging roller, remove some of it by rolling it on newspaper or a clean lint free Armaly ProPlus Terry Towel.
6. For two-toned ragging-on, choose colors that compliment each other. The last color applied will be the one to show the most. Applying dark color over light creates a bold dramatic effect. A light color over dark gives a soft, subtle look.
7. When your project is finished, discard the Armaly ProPlus Ragging Roller Cover and save the caged roller frame for your next project.
