Rat Cage Cleaning Tips

by DoItYourself Staff

While cleaning a rat cage is fairly straightforward task, there are still a few things you can do to make sure it goes as well as possible.

Move your Rat

In order to get your rat's cage nice and clean, you will have to take your rat out of it. However, this can present a problem if you do not have a place to put your rat. An extra cage can be a great temporary location if you have one, even if it is not very big or well furnished. Even a travel cage will do in a pinch. If you do not have an extra cage, you will probably need to recruit a friend to watch your rat, as they are notorious escape artists.

Clean Thoroughly

In order to get your rat cage nice and clean, you will need to start out by emptying out the bedding. You should also be sure to empty out any water and food containers. After your do this, you can scrub with a sponge soaked in water and dish soap. Finally, use bleach to disinfect, and rinse very thoroughly, as you do not want to leave bleach behind for your rat to find. Finally, allow the cage to air dry.
