Remodeling basements is one the most visually satisfying home improvement jobs that exist, as basements are generally not visually appealing to begin with. Most home improvement gurus and do-it-yourselfers advise finishing one home improvement project before starting another. However, when tackling a basement remodel, you can do the work in phases.
Planning a basement remodeling project
First, you will need to decide on two aspects of the project. Decide exactly what you want to do with the basement. Are you interested in adding one or two rooms? Do you want to add a bathroom, laundry room, or wet bar? Tackle the most difficult project first, and the rest will seem much easier.
Next, make a list of all of the materials that you will need. Realize that a basement remodel can take several weeks or months. So it is suggested that you buy the materials as you need them. Otherwise they will cost you a bundle at one time and the materials that you are not currently using will just be in the way.
Preparing a basement for remodeling
Since you are working in phases, plan approximately one weekend for each phase. In phase 1 you will need to prepare and repair ceilings, floors and walls, to include electrical, heating and plumbing work. Phase 2 can be tackling the wall covering; phases 3 & 4 can be ceiling and floor installation.
