Removing Wallpaper from Drywall

by DoItYourself Staff

what you'll need

  • Scoring Tool
  • Chemical Remover
  • Spray Bottle, or Roller and Brush
  • Putty Knife
  • Sponge

Removing wallpaper from drywall is a tricky process, but with the right tools, you should have a nice smooth surface when finished.

Step 1 - Score the Wallpaper

Scoring wallpaper permits the remover to go through the paper and reach the glue. Focus on one small section at a time, using a circular motion.

Step 2 - Apply the Remover

When applying the remover solution, there are two options; if choosing liquid remover, pour the remover in a spray bottle. When you spray the wallpaper make certain not to over wet it and drench the drywall beneath. If using gel, apply it with a roller; make certain to spread the gel uniformly. A brush is handy when trying to reach into corners.

Step 3 - Remove Wallpaper

Liquid requires 10 minutes and the gel needs about 30 minutes to penetrate the glue. Start peeling at the corner, and pull slowly, if the first layer is the only one peeling off, wait longer. When you begin peeling, mind that the drywall isn't also being removed. Using the putty knife, work on little areas to smoothly take off any wallpaper that may be left.

Step 4 - Finishing Up

Using a sponge and warm water, wash the walls, using as little water as needed.
