Replacing a DVD Player USB Port in 2 Easy Steps

by DoItYourself Staff

what you'll need

  • DVD Player USB Hub
  • Micro Tools
  • Screwdriver
  • Flash Drive

A DVD player with a USB port is becoming quite normal in today's technological world. These USB hubs enable owners to play a movie file directly from a computer, a thumb drive, or external hard drive. This technology gives consumers a much broader range in which they can purchase and view movies. Digital files can be purchased rather than DVDs. These files can then be played on a large screen, through the DVD player, without having to burn a DVD. While this technology is a tremendous advance, there are some problems associated with it. When a problem occurs with the DVD player USB hub, it will need to be replaced. Here is how you can do it yourself without having to send it away for costly repairs.

Step 1: Check External Drives First

Before you make any attempt at opening up the DVD player to get at the USB hub, you will need to make sure that it is not working properly. Check the flash drive, or the external drive, that you have plugged into it with another computer. If the drives still do not work, then here is a problem with them being corrupt. If they do work, then it is time to replace the DVD player USB hub.

Step 2: Remove Cover of DVD Player

Use the screwdriver and remove the cover of the DVD player. Many manufacturers will void the warranty if the cover is removed. However, if the warranty has already run out, you are not going to lose out on anything.

Step 3: Locate USB Hub

The DVD player USB hub is usually in the front of the unit. This is for the convenience of being able to stick the flash drive into the hub without having to look behind it. Look in that area to locate where the USB hub is attached.

Step 4: Remove Old USB Hub

Use the micro tools that you have on hand and unscrew the fasteners that are holding the USB hub to the carcass of the DVD player. Unplug the wires that are connected to it. These wires are usually only plugged into the back of the hub. Use a small screwdriver to pry up the tabs to remove the plug.

Step 5: Install New USB Hub

With the old DVD player USB hub removed from the system, you can then take a look at the wiring. At times, the wiring system of the USB gets too hot and fails causing the hub not to work. Look for signs of heat or any exposed wiring. If you do not find anything, then install the new USB hub. Plug the wires into the rear of the hub and secure to the DVD player with the fasteners.

Step 6: Replace Cover and Test

Once the DVD player USB hub is installed, replace the cover of the DVD player. Turn it on and use a thumb drive that you know works, and plug it into the new USB. Test to see if the movie starts to play as it should. If not, there is a different problem with the DVD player.
