Replacing Your Old Light Fixture with a Chandelier is Easy

by DoItYourself Staff

what you'll need

  • New chandelier and accessories
  • New junction box
  • Wire strippers
  • Wire caps or electrical tape
  • Screwdrivers
  • Circuit tester or multi-meter
  • Ratchet set or wrenches
  • Ladder
  • Light bulbs

If you want to replace an old, outdated light fixture with a new chandelier, you will probably have to make some modifications to the area in the ceiling where you're planning to install the chandelier. Changing out your old light fixture with a modern, new chandelier is not very difficult, but it does require a lot of care and attention to detail. Here is a quick step-by-step guide to help you replace an older light fixture with a new chandelier.

Step 1 - Check the Weight of the New Chandelier

Before you begin installing the new chandelier, you'll need to consider how much the chandelier weighs. If the chandelier is about the same approximate weight as the light fixture you're replacing, you may not have to do anything special and will simply be able to install the new chandelier. However, if there is considerable weight difference in the two, you will need to replace the junction box in your ceiling with a more heavy duty type junction box that is capable of supporting the weight of your new chandelier.

Step 2 - Safety

Turn off the power at the circuit breaker that controls the current going to the light fixture.

Step 3 - Remove the Old Light Fixture

Carefully remove the old light fixture from the ceiling. While removing the fixture, take note of the way the wires are connected to the fixture, and, if necessary, use masking tape to indicate which wire is positive and which is negative.

Step 4 - Replace the Old Junction Box

If you determined that you will need to install a new junction box, carefully remove the old junction box and replace it with a new one. You'll probably need to remove some locknuts that hold the conduit running from the breaker box to the junction box. Simply install the new box in the same way as the old one and make sure that it is securely fastened.

Step 5 – Prepare the Chandelier for Hanging

Take the new hardware that came with your chandelier and attach it to the mounting strap. If there is not a mounting strap for the junction box, you'll need to install one before continuing.

Step 6 - Attach the Mounting Strap

Use screws to securely attach the mounting strap to the bottom of the junction box.

Step 7 - Connect the Wires

Connect the wires from the chandelier to the old wires ensuring the colors match or that positive is connected to positive and negative to negative. Use new wire caps or high-quality electrical tape to properly cover and insulate the exposed wire.

Step 8 - Hang the Chandelier

Follow the manufacturer's instructions for hanging the chandelier, installing light bulbs and adding any ornamental bead lines or accessories to the chandelier.
