Restoring Antique Fixtures

by DoItYourself Staff

Antique fixtures can add an Old World feel to a modern room or complete the look of a traditional room. When shopping for antique light fixtures you may turn up one that has been lovingly cared for or recently restored or, more likely, one that is in need of a thorough refurbishment. Most antiques light fixtures can be brought back to life in a few steps.

Restore the Wiring

The wiring of the antique fixture is the most important part of the restoration process. Check the fixture's wiring; even if it appears to be in good condition, you may to rewire it. Since safety is always a consideration with lighting, rewiring is a prudent first step in a restoration project.

Sand Down the Metal

Generally, antique fixtures will be made out of a metal that may not have held up over time. While your fixture may not be in terrible condition, it has probably lost some of its original sheen. Sand down the metal and apply a special finishing coat to restore the look of the metal and to protect it from future rusting. You may want to retain the weathered look of the fixture, so your refurbishing project will have to strike a balance between restoration and preservation.

Repaint the Fixture

If you are not concerned with preserving the look of exposed metal, you may want to paint the fixture. Painting can help you revive an antique fixture that is past its prime while opening up a world of design possibilities to enhance your decor.

Find a New Shade

Fixtures often have shades to soften the light and diffuse it around the room. Using the original shade, if it is in good condition, will maintain the historical integrity of the fixture. Changing the shade for a new one, however, opens the door to blending the antique design of the fixture with a modern element. Do not be afraid to experiment with new shades on an antique fixture.

Restoring an antique fixture will bring your decor out of the standardized world of home improvement stores, allowing you to display original pieces that are no longer available to the mass market. Restoring it yourself will make the fixture all the more enjoyable.
