Restoring Vintage Light Fixtures

by DoItYourself Staff

Restoring your vintage light fixtures can save you money and revitalize your living space. There are three areas on the fixture that you will need to restore and clean. Those areas are the base, the wiring, and the glass.

The Base

If the base is just dirty, clean with a baking soda and water paste.  If you want to repaint it, you will need to smooth the base using a fine grade of sand paper.  Make sure to wear a mask, since some vintage light fixtures could have lead paint on them.  If there are rusty spots, you may have to use a coarser grade of sand paper.  Once sanded down, you can spray with a bronze paint to achieve an older look.

The Wiring

If the light fixture is not working and you aren’t comfortable with electrical work, then taking it into a lighting store or to an electrician is the best option.

The Glass Shade

If the original glass on the lighting fixture is in tact, using some soapy water and a soft cloth or sponge will clean off any dust or dirt.  Once cleaned, spray with Windex to achieve a shine.  If the shade is broken, you can buy a new one by taking the fixture into a lighting center or an antique store.
