After a summer of parties and kids playing, the carpeting in your house may show the results of soda spills, painting sessions or bloody knees. Luckily, you need not rip up the carpet and start fresh. Instead, first find a carpet scrap that matches the damaged area. Then loosely nail down a paint can lid over the damaged area and use the lid's edge as a guide to cut out the soiled spot. Use the same nifty lid trick to cut a same-sized hole in the scrap. Finally, secure the patch and loose carpet with double-sided carpet tape and weight it down with a large board and heavy pail of water.
