Salvaging An Old Electrical Box

by DoItYourself Staff
Salvaging an old electrical box can something that will save you a little money when remodeling a room, or adding a new addition to your home. Salvaging an old electrical box is simply reusing the old box in a new installation.

Is the Old Electric Box Salvageable?

Can you salvage the old electrical box? While there is nothing against reusing the old box, you must look at it and determine whether or not you can indeed use it. Check for deterioration, rust, and breakage. If the box is too bad, it is easier to just buy a new one.

Remove with Care

Usually when remodeling is done, people get a little carried away with the demo. Take time in removing the electrical box so you can reuse it again. Twisting or breaking it off the stud will require a new box. When removing the box, easily pry it off the stud with a pry bar working at the nail itself. If you are removing a plastic box, unscrew the adjusting screws to loosen the rear tabs.

Clean It Up

If you are salvaging a metal box, then clean it up by sanding off the surface rust. While it isn't going to do anything now, it can deteriorate the box more over time. Finish it off with a coat of paint or metal glazing to protect it.
