Sandbagging: Quickly Fill a Burlap Sandbag

by DoItYourself Staff

A sandbag is necessary in natural disaster situations. You don’t want to be caught without one, so learning how to quickly fill a burlap sandbag is essential.

Components of a Sandbag

While burlap sandbags are sturdier, sand is not the best way to fill them. The sand can seep through natural burlap. Soil is the best filler for these bags, though a mixture of soil and gravel is effective too. Choose materials which will pack together, leaving no space for water to come in. Each sandbag should hold between 25 and 35 pounds of material. When buying filler, make sure you overestimate what you need so you do not run out midway through filling.

Get Help to Fill the Bags

The most efficient method is to get a friend to help you fill the sandbags you need. One person can hold the bag, while the other fills up the bags with the mixture of materials. This will save you time and effort. Fill the bags only to halfway, then tie off the sandbag and move onto the next bag.

Sandbagging is something no one wants to do, but when it will protect your home or business, it’s a task you need to do—and quickly.
