Anyone who celebrates Christmas can’t deny the nostalgia of the jolly ole fat guy we’ve come to know as Santa Claus. Although Christmas is celebrated as a religious holiday, children are drawn into endless nights of dreams about Santa’s long trek around the world and the mere thought of waking up to gifts galore on Christmas day. Most people say that Santa is not real; some would even say that ‘Santa’ was a marketing ploy for commercialism, but could Santa have been a real person?
Lots of historians agree that St. Nicholas, a.k.a Santa Claus, was a real life person!
Across the ocean deep in the country of Turkey legends and stories are still told to this day about a Christian monk with a big heart. It is believed that the monk’s name was none other than St. Nicholas. St. Nicholas became well known because of his kind-heartedness with children, and the protection he provided for sailors.
One of the most famous stories about St. Nicholas is how he saved three sisters from being sold into slavery by giving each of the sisters a dowry so they could be married in line with Turkish tradition.
It’s believed that St. Nicholas was born around 280 A.D.
It’s doubtful that there ever was a Turkish monk parading around in a big red suit, handing out presents and holiday cheer, but who knows? Anything is possible.
