A sealer is a type of finishing material applied directly to uncoated wood. Sealers can be clear or offer pigment depending on the situation. A sealer is used to prevent paint, varnish or even condensation from seeping directly into the wood and causing warping.
Why you Should use a Sealer?
When working with any form of exposed wood it is important to use some kind of sealer. The kind of sealer you use will depend on the conditions the wood will be exposed to. Certain types of sealers will provide a good degree of protection against moisture. Others are strictly used to protect the wood prior to apply paint or varnish.
For items such as indoor tables, a sealer which does not offer as high a degree of moisture protection will function fine as a base prior to applying a varnish. For things like outside patios or decks, a sealer which provides a high degree of moisture protection is recommended to protect the wood from rain and humidity.
