By sealing your shower light fixture properly, you are ensuring that no water will get into it, extending the life of the fixture.
Installing Your Light
The first step in waterproofing your shower light fixture is to make sure that you have installed the light correctly. Follow the instructions carefully. Recessed shower lights get hot, since they are enclosed, and have a 40W or less max bulb power. You should only use a fluorescent bulb to get bright light.
The wet condition metal shower trim you purchase for the recessed light fixture will be the most important aspect of sealing the light fixture in properly. This metal fixture may be included with your lighting kit or you may have to buy it separately.
Sealing Your Shower Light Fixture
For the next part of the job you will need a tube of bathroom sealing silicone and a cocking gun.
Cut a very small 45 degree hole in the tip of the cocking gun and PUSH the gun, never pull. As you push the gun, it passes over the silicone and shapes the seal into a tiny quadrant which will barely be noticeable. This method seals better than a wide finger pushed joint which has paper thin edges that peel and discolour. Don't be tempted to touch the joint after. Let it dry and gently rub off any little over flow tracks once dry.
