Beets are a very popular in home gardens because they are very easy to grow. Beets are also good to eat because of their tasy roots and leaves. The following provides some tips for the correct way to grow beets.
Tools and Materials Needed:
- Beet seeds
- Tiller
- Trowel
Step 1 – Plant at the Right Time
Beets grow best when they are planted in the Spring when the weather is between 60 and 80 degrees. Depending on your region, spring will also provide beets with plenty of rain water to help them get off to a good start.
Step 2 – Getting the Soil Ready
Beets can grow in most any soil, but they prefer loose, well drained soils. Till the soil no earlier than one month before planting to prevent drying the soil out. In order to make sure your soil is in prime condition, have it tested for nitrogen and phosphate levels before adding fertilizer. Make sure to remove all rocks, which can inhibit proper growth.
Step 3 – Plant Your Seeds
Plant your seeds no deeper than half an inch. When you create your rows, keep them 12 to 18 inches apart in order to avoid crowding.
