Securely Attach A Clamp Desk Lamp

by DoItYourself Staff

A clamp desk lamp is a useful tool in a variety of situations. If you have a desk with limited desk space, then a clamp lamp takes up less room on your desktop. Clamp lamps are adjustable and can be installed on the portion of the desk where you need light. They come in a wide variety of styles and colors, so they are versatile and customizable.

To install the clamp desk lamp, there are a few easy steps to follow.

Step One–Choose the Lamp

Besides looking at color, size and style, you have a variety of different clamp styles from which to choose.

First, consider what you need from your lamp. Do you need a light at the side or back of the desk that illuminates the entire desk? Or do you need a lamp that can extend over the entire desk when you need it to? Do you need a small lighted area, or do you need it to illuminate your entire desk?

You can find compact and large lamps, so determine your needs first, then find the lamp that fits your needs.

Once you have determined what you need, then start your search among the many styles available. Narrow your search according to your requirements.

Step Two – Prepare Your Desk

Determine the location where you plan to install the lamp. Clear the area, and rearrange the items on the desk. Take the size and overhang of the lamp into account as you are placing items like notepads and writing utensils.  You don’t want to bump the lamp each time you reach for a tool.

If you have a wood desk that is painted or varnished, use a soft cloth to protect the finish. A clamp desk lamp will, over time, stick to the finish and ruin it. A soft cloth between the finish and the lamp will help avoid that problem.

Step Three – Assemble the Lamp

Remove the lamp and all the pieces from the packaging. Find the instructions for putting the lamp together and read them over.

Most clamp desk lamps require some minor amount of assembly. This may include putting the clamp into the lamp, attaching an arm to a base, or installing the lampshade. Whatever assembly is required should be fairly simple.

The final step of any assembly is generally installing the bulb into the lamp.

Step Four – Attach the Lamp to the Desk

This step is likely the simplest of the steps, but you may have some problems with the process.

If you have a thin edge for the lamp, there may be a difficulty finding a place the clamp has enough room to “grab” the edge. Use a thin piece of wood to give the clamp more grip if this is the case. You may have to find another place on the desk to clamp it down.

There are several different types of clamps. Most are spring loaded, but some require twisting a bolt to adjust. Avoid clamping these lamps too tightly or too loosely. Clamping the lamp too tight damages the desk but if it's attached too loose it will fall.
