Select the Best Deck System for You

A deck system is a system which utilizes premanufactured components to build a deck. A deck system offers the advantage of making the process of building a deck easier. There are a number of deck systems available and they all offer certain pros and cons.

Comparing Modular to Post Deck Systems

There are two types of deck systems. Modular and post deck systems. Modular is a more complex deck system which offers modular components that are prefabricated and ready to install. Modular systems are easy to install and easy to expand. Expanding modular systems can be costly due to the design of the system.

Post based deck systems are a simpler type of deck system. They do not provide the wood, screws or any other building materials. They provide concrete blocks which are designed to support the lumber that will be used for building the deck. It is the owners responsability to provide the wood and other materials which are used to actually build the deck. They reduce the build time and difficulty by removing the need to dig post holes or pour concrete. The entire build cost of this type of deck system is lower than modular systems. In fact, they are often less expensive than building a traditional deck. They require more work than modular systems because they provide no prefabricated lumber.

Choose the Right Material

Deck systems are available which utilize wood and synthetic materials. Wood has the look and feel that many people want to find in a deck but many of the synthetic materials are able to offer improved life spans and reduced maintenance. This does come at an additional costs. Most of the synthetic materials cost between 2 and 4 times what standard wood costs. When considering the materials you want consider the maintenance costs that go along with wood. In many cases the cost of maintaining wood will outweigh the additional cost of synthetic materials. One factor to consider when comparing the material options is the climate. Extremely cold temperatures can be hard on wood. Using a synthetic material can lead to a much longer life span in these types of environments.

Picking the Right Size

Size is an important option when picking a deck system. Many of the modular systems can be expanded to fill a large space if you are looking to build a large deck but this comes at an additional cost. Simpler deck systems which only supply a base structure do not provide the wood or other materials so increasing the size does not increase the cost as sharply.
