- Digital Camera
- Tripod
- Photo Editing software
Photos help memories last forever. If you want to improve your photography there are a number of skills you can learn. Taking self portrait photos is an art form and this can be very difficult at times. However, with the right tools and tips taking fantastic self portrait photos gets a little easier.
Step 1 - Composing the Shot
First, you need to compose the shot for your self portrait photo. You can either take this photo inside or outside, depending on what you think works best. Try to choose somewhere which has a plain background so that your face will stand out.
Step 2 - Mounting the Camera
Once you have chosen your location mount the camera on the tripod. Set the height of the tripod so that it allows you to take photos of your waist upwards. This is normally what you will want to include in a portrait photo.
If you want to take a full body photo you will need to move the camera further away from you and make sure that the height is adjusted correctly. To get an idea of the height you might want to get someone else help by standing where you will take the photo.
Step 3 - Sample Photos
You might also like to take a few practice shots to get an idea of how things will look. This will help you to get a sense of the finished self portrait photo. You can also hold the camera at arms length to get an idea of the finished photo.
Take at least 10 photos using the basic settings on your camera. Then you can review these photos on your computer to get suggestions on which photos work the best. Experiment with different settings for each photo to figure out which ones are the most successful.
If you're not sure about the location for the photo shoot you could also experiment with a few different places to find out what they look like on film. You are just messing around at this point, so you can use it as an opportunity to try out all of the advanced functions on your camera.
Step 4 - Setting the Timer
To take your actual self portrait pictures you will need to use the timer. Read the camera's manual if you aren't sure about how to set up the timer function.
Step 5 - Taking the Photo
Next, you need to press the button and quickly but calmly walk to where you have decided to stand. Take your pose and wait for the camera to finish taking the photo.
Step 6 - Enhancements
Once you have mastered the basic self portrait photo you might like to experiment with some different options. Lighting can be adjusted and different backgrounds can be used to bring extra life to your self portrait. Taking a portrait is an art form and it's up to you to experiment.
