A home video security system adds protection to your home and can help reduce your insurance costs. Home video security systems not only make it easier to catch a burglar, but they also discourage most burglars from attempting to break into your home.
Tools and Materials Needed
- Security cameras
- 1 pair 16 gauge wire
- Wireless receiver
- Philips and flathead screwdrivers (or power driver)
- Staple gun
Step 1 – Select the Cameras
The most important place to install a camera is near the front door. Many homes have some kind of cover over the front door, so a camera placed high and far may not capture all activity. Special door cameras are a good option for front doors. Wireless cameras offer easier installation because they do not use complicated wires, though they can be overpowered more easily than wired models.
Step 2 – Select the Installation Locations
Determine where you will install your cameras. For most locations, place the camera 10 to 12 feet from the location you want to observe. This will allow you to angle the camera to see a person’s face without requiring the camera to be at face level. Consider not only the front door, but also gates, rear and side entries, and even the mailbox.
Step 3 – Run the Wire
This step is, of course, only necessary if you are using wired cameras. When running wires, use the attic if possible. When not possible, run the wires along the eves of the home and secure them with a staple gun. If running the wires in the attic, secure them to the rafters to keep them away from high voltage wires.
Step 4 – Setup the Television or Computer Hookup
Before you install the cameras, set up the computer or television on which you will view the recordings. This will allow you to verify that you have a good angle as you install the cameras.
With wired cameras, attach RCA ends to the 1 pair 16 gauge wire to provide power. Connect them to your video receiving equipment.
Step 5 – Install the Cameras
Have another person help you with installation. After you hook up and mount the cameras, the other person can monitor the video feed and instruct you on how to adjust the camera. In the end, you should have a clear view of anyone entering or leaving each entrance.
If you are using a wired camera, attach RCA ends to the wire. Connect the yellow to the video output and the red to the power input. Verify that you are receiving video and then adjust the cameras angle as necessary.
Step 6 – Test the System
View the feed from each camera. Have another person approach your house and verify that you can clearly see his face. Test the recording feature to verify it is working properly. For further instructions and special features, refer to the manual supplied with the camera system.
