Intro - Suspended - Closet - Recessed - Checklist
Many rooms have recessed cubbyhole walls, or even closets which you might like to open up, for exposed shelving.
It is a simple matter to measure and cut boards to fit vertically on either side of the alcove. Inexpensive hardware tracks can then be screwed plumb into the boards and adjustable clips installed in the tracks for multi-position shelving.
First measure and cut the shelving from plywood or 1" stock. Then, face the plywood with a 1 x 2 to cover up the rough edges. Next, add quarter round as trim pieces and paint the entire system to match the room's decor for an inexpensive and attractive wall unit. Adding sticky-back mirror squares at the back of a shelving system of this sort magnifies the space.
If you are using wood boards for your shelving, you will achieve a much finer finish with an orbital sander. The finishing process will go much faster and the result will be much smoother. It is worth renting one if you do not own one.
