Should You Use a Shower Curtain Liner?

by DoItYourself Staff

Hotel style vinyl shower curtain liners are popular alternatives or additions to the traditional fabric shower curtains. Their low cost, ease of maintenance and wide variety of colors make them easy ways to perk up bathroom decor quickly and inexpensively. Should you use a liner? If you want to save wear and tear on your fabric shower curtain and make the curtain last longer, you should consider using a liner.

The soft vinyl liner is washable and durable. You may wash liners once a week if you like but monthly cleaning in warm water with laundry detergent on a mild setting in your washing machine is generally all that is needed to keep your liner clean. When the washing and rinsing cycles are complete, simply shake out the liner and rehang it to dry. Unlike stiffer plastic shower curtains, liners are made from a softer polyester and are more flexible. Liners are mildew resistance and may be clear, translucent or colored. Shower curtain liners are readily available in most home and bath supply stores.

Advantages of Using a Shower Liner

  • Prevent or reduce mildew on fabric
  • Easy to clean in a washing machine
  • Inexpensive
  • Available in a variety of colors, textures and styles
  • Disposable
  • More sanitary than fabric curtains
