Physical

  • China cabinets, knick-knack shelves and bookshelves should be attached to wall studs
  • Avoid heavy hanging plants over a place where people sit, use light, unbreakable pots hung from ceiling studs
  • Heavy objects should be moved to bottom shelves or secured
  • Beds should be moved away from big windows
  • Attach water heater to the wall studs
  • Gas appliances with rigid feed line should be replaced with flexible connectors
  • Outside chimney should be braced to the house
  • House should be bolted to the foundation.
  • Install clips, latches, or other locking devices on cabinet doors.
  • Provide strong support and flexible connections on gas appliances.
  • Brace overhead light fixtures.
  • Hang heavy items such as pictures, clocks and mirrors away from beds and places where people sit.
  • Repair any deep cracks in ceilings or foundations.
