Sledge Hammers

Sledge hammers are used for many purposes.  Mostly sledge hammers are used in demolition and to manually drive large spikes or posts.  Not all sledge hammers are the same though.  Keep reading to find out everything you need to know about sledge hammers.

All About Sledge Hammers

There are two main things you need to think about when selecting sledge hammers:  the head and the handle.  The head is usually a very heavy chunk of metal that comes in different weights.

Typically the heavier sledge hammers will do the most damage, but if you use sledge hammers that are too heavy for you, you are likely to damage yourself as much as what you intended to destroy.  The head of sledge hammers should always be attached to the handle securely and made of materials that are unlikely to shatter or splinter to avoid injury.

The handle of sledge hammers is always up for debate.  Many people swear by fiberglass handled sledge hammers because the handle will not swell or shrink and some feel it is less likely to break.

Many people still feel that wooden handled sledge hammers are the best way to go.  If properly cared for, wooden handled sledge hammers will last for a very long time and if they do break they are less likely to leave jagged dangerous edges.
