Soil

by DoItYourself Staff

Putting soil in your garden can be fun, if you know how to do it right. Every year, many people choose to cover their gardens with a new layer of soil to keep it rich in minerals and nutrients. Before you lay it down, however, there are a few things you need to do first.

• Step 1: Remove any debris from your garden like wrappers, rocks, tools, or gloves.
• Step 2: Remove as much of the old plants as you can. Any plants that you do not expect to come up this year should be removed.
• Step 3: Turn the soil of your garden either with a shovel or a machine. If you are working in a flower garden, make sure you steer clear of your bushes and perennials.
• Step 4: Add your new layer of soil evenly on top of the old one.

Adding Compost to Your Soil

If you have your own compost pile you should add it to the soil you are using in your garden. Compost is rich in nutrients and minerals if it has been made right, and therefore it is some of the best dirt to grow your plants in.
