Solar Motion Detector Light Installation

by DoItYourself Staff

what you'll need

  • Solar motion detector light
  • Drill
  • Screwdriver
  • Pencil
  • Wire caps

There are many options available for home security but one simple to install option is a solar motion detector light. A solar motion detector light is a simple device that is powered by the sun and when the beam is broken the light comes on. The lights in a solar motion detector can be very bright which can startle and scare away not only animals but possible intruders. You can install a solar motion detector light yourself as it is easy and this article will show you how.

Step 1 - Placing the Solar Motion Detector Light

Solar motion detector lights can go nearly anywhere as they do not have any wires that need to be installed. They're perfect to light dark sidewalks, a parking lot, garage or deck. You need to decide where you wish to place the solar motion detector light. The area needs to be free of trees and bushes in front of the solar motion detector. The mountain surface needs to be relatively flat. Units that have an attached solar panel will also need to be placed in an area that receives direct sunlight.

Some units will come with a solar panel that is apart from the rest of the solar motion detector. These are great because it allows you to place the solar motion detector light in place but allow the solar panel to collect sunlight from another area. Select an area that faces the southern sky for best results and make sure there are no obstructions to the solar panel. The most direct sunlight it can get the better it will store and serve energy.

Step 2 - Connecting the Panel to the Motion Detector

The solar panel and the motion detector will connect via a wire that is usually included with the solar motion detector kit. You can always purchase a similar wire that is longer than the one provided. Measure the distance between the solar panel and the motion detector. Cut a length of wire to that length with an extra inch or two.

Step 3 - Installing the Solar Motion Detector Light

Place the solar motion detector light in the area where you want to install it. Hold it in place and make a mark in the mounting holes of the bracket. Use the drill to make pilot holes through the marks you made. Use a drill bit that is slightly smaller than the screws included with the kit. Only make the pilot holes 1/8-inch deep. Once the pilot holes are drilled; hold the solar motion detector light in place. Place a screw through the hole and into a pilot hole. Use the screwdriver to insert the screws in place. Affix the solar panel in place in the same manner as the solar motion detector.

Step 4 - Finishing the Installation

Strip the ends of the wire and put it in place between the solar motion detector and the solar panel. Connect the wires and cap them. Activate the light and adjust as needed.
