Spa Treatments for Mental Health

by DoItYourself Staff

Spa treatments cleanse more than just the body – they also cleanse the mind of toxic thoughts, stress, and tension. While impurities in the skin are released and eliminated, dead skin cells are sloughed away, and the outer layer of the skin is enriched with natural moisture boosters, the body begins to feel more youthful, energized, and rejuvenated. These treatments also improve the quality of our minds through our senses. Spa treatments are much more than just about beauty; they are about mental health.

Relaxation

Relaxation is essential to a healthy mind. When the body stops working, the mind may still not be at rest. However, spa treatments slow down our thoughts so that our minds can finally take much-needed breaks. An atmosphere where there air is an ideal temperature (neither too hot nor too cool), an environment filled with aromatheraputic scents,  soothing music or the sounds of nature, as well as the expert touch of the spa therapist, can lull the mind into a state of serenity.

Pampering

From time to time, it’s necessary to do something nice – just for ourselves. When that nice gesture to say, “I deserve a gift,” includes being pampered by a spa technician whose training and job experience revolves around making people feel good, it’s even better. Whether we’re getting a simple steam facial or a seaweed body wrap, having someone attend to our health, beauty, and well-being is good for our minds. All day long it seems as though we are catering to others; spa treatments are pleasures in which we don't lift a finger for anyone – even ourselves.

Cleansing

Removing toxins from the body and freeing the epidermis of dead skin cells can also have a cleansing mind-spirit effect. When your body is released from its casing of pollutants, your mind is less cluttered, more ready for the next challenge. Often, people who have spa body wraps feel "lighter" - as though an actual weight has been lifted off of them. Psychologically speaking, this “weight” is also lifted from the proverbial shoulders; the mind-body connection is integral to the spa experience.

Beauty

Spa treatments not only make us feel better by releasing tension through massage and other treatments, they also make us more beautiful. Radiant skin and a relaxed air give anyone a more youthful, pleasant appearance. The weeks' residual tension has evaporated with the steam from the sauna. And when we look great, we feel great. Feeling beautiful is healthy: it boosts confidence, makes us more energetic lovers, and makes us more assertive.

Relaxation, pampering, cleansing, and beauty - these benefits to mental health are often unprecedented side-effects to the spa beauty-treatment. So don't go to the spa just for the effects it will have on skin and body, go for the mental health benefits, too.
