Standard Garage Door Sizes

by DoItYourself Staff

Purchasing a garage door involves a number of considerations, including whether your home can utilize one of the standard garage door sizes. Keep in mind these are per-door sizes. Calculations for single, double and triple garage doors would vary accordingly.

Standard Heights

There are two basic standard heights for garage doors: 7 feet and 8 feet. Many garage door manufacturers can accommodate custom orders, and many offer doors in heights that are various inches below the foot height, such as 6 feet, 6 feet 3 inches, 6 feet 6 inches, 6 feet 9 inches (and the same for the 8 feet heights.

Standard Widths

Depending on whether it’s a single, double or triple garage, widths for standard garage door sizes include 8 feet, 9 feet, 16 feet and 18 feet. Jeld Wen, for example, offers garage doors in widths of 10 feet for classic, modern, Mediterranean, European and old world designs. Custom size widths are also generally available.

Uses Important

Standard garage door sizes are less complicated when it comes to choosing your garage door if you know the types of vehicles and equipment or storage you’ll need to accommodate in your garage. If you have a large pickup, you may need a wider and taller door than if you have compact or midsize cars. You may need a larger size also if you park your boat or snowmobile trailer in the garage.
