Standards for Energy Star Refrigerators

by DoItYourself Staff

If you are concerned with green living, but still want to have the use of modern conveniences in the kitchen, then you may be considering buying Energy Star refrigerators and fridge-freezers. These are required by the government to be significantly more efficient than the usual models, and to have significant improvements in environmental conservation.

Energy Star Refrigerators and Standards

As early as 2007, the people behind Energy Star were delivering reports about the kinds of standards which they expected from a refrigeration unit. One such standard is that the devices are expected to be at least 30 percent more efficient than the usual models. These models can also be subsidized by local authorities. Most Energy Star refrigeration units use very high efficiency compressors within the mechanism, and are also better insulated in order to help keep the temperature constant without requiring more energy.

Energy Efficiency

Energy star approved models of refrigerator must actually be more efficient than those which already meet the minimum standard for energy efficiency as set out in federal advice. Energy star also recommend top-mounted refrigerators as generally less wasteful than side or bottom mounted refrigerators. Most of these energy efficiency standards are calculated on items which were not providing 'through the door' ice while being tested.
